The island of Esøy is located at the inlet to Hamnøy sound in Vevelstad. The island is also called the “Coast’s largest guestbook” because of the many inscriptions on the rock faces. There are inscriptions from around the year 1000 AD and from the beginning of the 1600s personal marks are carved in the soapstone rock faces. There has also been a substantial mining of soapstone for building materials for various churches, including Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. In the summer season a floating jetty is moored for easier access.

Nordland sculpture program. “Opus for Heaven and Earth” by Oddvar I.N. The artwork is located on the hillside above Høyholm along the Coastal Route 17 in Vevelstad. It has the shape of a circle that is cut directly into the rock. The polished bedrock will reflect the light and catch the sun in a dialogue with the earth. The artist says that his idea refers to human migration across the globe. The circle symbolising unchanging continuity and eternal recurrence is known worldwide.

Vevelstad Church is a wooden construction which was dedicated on the 16. September 1796. In 1871 it was extended giving the present-day appearance. During the extension many fixtures were removed but the altar piece, the pulpit and the mural on the transverse wall of the chancel were left. These art treasures have been painted by the Italian painter Joseph Pisani (1760-1833). His motives are Mediterranean in color and shape. At the church stands a war memorial erected on the grave of some of the war victims.
